Britain's railways led the world, from Trevithick's Pen-y-Darren locomotive to the 'Railway Mania' of the 1850s. A new Benham Customised Sheet celebrates an often neglected aspect of railway engineering - tunnels. Britain's varied landscape posed particular challenges to the pioneer railway engineers, for whom the most direct route was the priority necessitating tunnelling under rivers and through hills and mountains. The sheet marks the 125th anniversary of the Severn Railway Tunnel, which opened to passenger traffic on 1 December 1886. Ten tunnels are depicted on the sheet labels, from the earliest at Crown Street Liverpool, 1829 to the Channel Tunnel of 1994. Numbered Limited Edition of 500.
